Research Theme
” Investigating the Impact of Emerging Technologies on Payment Systems and Privacy Protection”
Research Context
We offer a PhD research grant in economics to explore the impact of new technologies such as blockchains and artificial intelligence on payments as well as the privacy of data. The applicant will have the opportunity of undertaking research work at the frontier of economics, computer science and finance. While new technologies can greatly improve the automatization and efficiency of payment systems, their use raises several risks, in particular regarding the protection of consumer privacy (See Flavio and Pino, 2022 for a survey on the microeconomics of data). What are the incentives of firms to adopt new technologies and collect data on their consumers when they pay? How do these strategies impact product prices, banking competition and social welfare? What will be the future design of payment systems?
Research Significance
The findings from this research will contribute to gaining knowledge about the advantages and disadvantages of the new technologies in the financial sector, by looking specifically at payment systems.
